Obituary for Dennis E. Schirm
Dennis E. Schirm, 63, of Dexter, Iowa passed away April 6, 2018 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be held Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at the Dexter Roundhouse. A Celebration of Life Service will follow the visitation at 1:00 P.M. at the Roundhouse. Burial will follow the service in the Dexter City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Dexter Fire & Rescue Department and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Dennis was born on June 14, 1954 to Dean and Caryl (Raffensperger) Schirm in Dexter, Iowa. He graduated from Dexfield Community School with the class of 1972. Following graduation, Dennis worked at Dexter Lumber and Hardware, Super Valu Warehouse, Moehl Millwork Inc. for over 34 years and spent the last 9 years as a Warehouse Manager at ABC Electrical Service. Dennis was united in marriage to Deborah Jirak on August 18, 1979 at the 5X80 County Club in Menlo and together they became the proud parents of two boys, Jason and Jamie. Following their marriage, they made their home in Dexter. Dennis was very active within the community he loved dearly. He joined the Dexter Fire Department at an early age and this year was his 47th year on the department. During this time, he served in just about every capacity you could imagine including Fire Chief on several occasions. Dennis was an avid race fan. He started racing in 1977 and this love of racing flowed down to his two boys Jason and Jamie. They raced every weekend during the season and in 2017 he was extremely proud of Jamie and Team 56 for capturing the season championship at Stuart Speedway. Dennis also enjoyed hunting, fishing, vacationing, carpentry work, day trips, pool parties and Brock, his boxer. His main passion in life was his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Caryl Schirm, father-in-law Gene Jirak and his best friend, Earl Clayton.
Dennis leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Deborah of Dexter; his boys, Jason (Maria) Schirm and Jamie Schirm; brother, Gary (Jan) Schirm; mother-in-law, Carolyn (Ed) Haugen; step mother-in-law, Alberta Jirak; brother-in-law, Doug (Sharon) Jirak; nephews, Jeremy, Jeff, and Arlie Schirm, Jeremy and Jon (Jen) Canavan and Josie and Evie; aunts, Helen Nevins and Maxine Schirm; family, Bob (Jane) Schirm, Betty (Tom) Kozyra, The Eckharts and a host of other relatives and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
