Obituary for Harry Washington Kalbach
Harry Washington Kalbach, 87, of Menlo, Iowa passed away October 28, 2017 at his home. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, November 3, 2017 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory – Stuart Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will follow the services in Rose Hill Cemetery with full military honors being rendered. Memorial contributions may be made to the Menlo Fire Department and may sent in care of, Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Harry was born October 10, 1930 to Harry and Mary (McKee) Kalbach in Dexter, Iowa. His childhood was spent in Menlo and at the age of 15 he moved to Greenfield. In December of 1950, Harry enlisted into the United States Navy being discharged in 1951 due to his father’s passing. Harry reenlisted into the Navy in June of 1952 and was stationed aboard the USS Pascagoula (PCE-874) during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on March 16, 1956. Following his discharge, Harry returned to Menlo for 2 years and drove a truck before taking a year off to travel in 1960. This trip lead to Louisiana, Alabama and then finally to Florida to visit an old shipmate. Following this trip he returned to Menlo and purchased the tank wagon for Cities Service Oil Company. This same year, 1961, he met the love of his life, Janice Bentley, and they were united in marriage on June 10, 1962. To this union three children were born, Kurt, Colleen and Julia. Shortly after their marriage they purchased the filling station in Menlo and operated it until 1992. In 1995, he and his son Kurt opened Signs from your Designs, which remained in business until it was sold in 2010. Harry was a member of the Menlo American Legion, Patrol Craft Sailors Association, Menlo Fire Department for over 25 years and served as a past Assistant Chief, the Iowa Firefighters Association and a member of the Oil Jobbers Association. He and Jan enjoyed traveling in their spare time and enjoyed the many trips to the Navy reunions with their friends Bill & Bev Wright

He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Janice on January 21, 2017 and his siblings, Barbara Zanders, Gerald Kalbach, & Gretchen Kalbach.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his children, Kurt Kalbach of Duluth, Minnesota, Colleen (Dave) Hodson of Des Moines, Iowa and Julia (Travis) Green of Redfield, Iowa; sister, Elizabeth (Liz) Kalbach of Stuart and a host of other relatives and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
