Obituary for Alan Hillgren
Alan Hillgren, 61, of Stuart, Iowa passed away June 22, 2015 at his home surround by family. A Celebration of his life will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 26th at the First Congregational Church in Stuart. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Johnson Family Funeral Home - Stuart Chapel. Al, as he was known, by family and friends, was born February 7, 1954 to James and JoAnne Eaton Hillgren in Creston, Iowa. Al grew up in Stuart and graduated from Stuart-Menlo High School with the class of 1972. He was united in marriage to Carla Rae McLuen on December 9, 1972 in Stuart and together they became the proud parents of three children, Angie, Crystal and John. They made their home in Stuart following their marriage. Al, was employed by Seneca Companies in Des Moines on September 30, 1974 and was the 4th Seneca Employee hired on within the company. He was an integral part of the growth of Seneca. When Al started with Seneca in the construction department, he was one of 2 people. Through Al’s leadership and direction over the years, the team now consists of over 60 construction employees and over 50 service technicians-covering a 14 state territory. Throughout his 40 plus year tenure at Seneca, he held various positions such as Construction Supervisor and Service Manager-working his way up to vice president of Petroleum and Construction. Throughout the years, Al served on several boards and associations including, PMCI (Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa) board 2009-2010, Iowa Department of Natural Resources – UST Professional Section with this he helped educate and helped pass numerous pieces of legislation around tank installs, Renewable Fuels Infrastructure Board in which he was nominated by the Governor, and taught Certified Tank Installer Courses through PMMIC (Petroleum Marketers Management Insurance Company. These are just a few of the boards and associations that Al helped with and managed throughout his tenure with Seneca.
Al, enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising his pet fox named Blaze and spending time with family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman, taking multiple trips a year. Some of his favorites include an annual family trip to Minnesota and a deer camp each fall. He also loved trout fishing trips to Highlandville in northeast Iowa. Anyone who has ever taken a trip with Al knows it will always include a bounty of food that was cooked in cast iron – another of his favorite hobbies.
He is preceded in death by his father, James Hillgren.
Al leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Carla Hillgren of Stuart; children, Angie (Dustin) Capps of Stuart, Crystal (Cory) Kirkpatrick of Stuart and John Hillgren of Stuart; mother, JoAnna Hillgren of Stuart; grandchildren, Dylan Moore, McKayla Moore, Zach Capps, Lauren Capps, Jacob Capps, Adelynne Capps, Paige Donnelly, Brenden Donnelly, Darin Kirkpatrick, Ty Kirkpatrick, Abigail Kirkpatrick, Mekhia Hillgren, and Marley Hillgren; siblings, Kevin (Sue) Hillgren, Jim (Rhonda) Hillgren and Kristina Czuprynske and a host of nieces, nephews and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
