Obituary for Amanda "Peggy" M. Alston
Amanda “Peggy” Alston, 94, of Stuart passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the Stuart Community Care Center. Funeral service will be held at 4 P.M. on Thursday, April 9th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Graveside service will be held at 2 P.M. on Friday, April 10th at the Climbing Hill Cemetery near Climbing Hill, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Stuart Fire & Rescue and/or the Stuart Community Care Center Foundation; contributions may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, IA 50250. Peggy was born on August 13, 1920 to Carl Elmer and Clara Marie (Hennings) Westlin in Lloyd Township near Terril, Iowa. She attended school in Terril and graduated from Terril High School with the class of 1938. After graduation she worked in a dental office in Spencer, Iowa. In 1940, she took nurse’s training at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines. In 1942, she attended the School of Cosmetology by Helen Ward in Sioux City. Peggy was the first student to take the 2100 hour course in Iowa. She then owned her own beauty shop in Spencer, along with a shop under the Roof Gardens at Arnold’s Park at Lake Okoboji.
On December 19, 1942 she was united in marriage to Wesley G. Alston in Lubbock, Texas. When he went overseas, she joined her Mother and Father in Stuart where she had her own beauty shop. On February 15, 1945 the couple was blessed with a son, Richard. Peggy began working for Holiday Inn South in 1960 as a night auditor and retired in 1995.
She was a member of the Stuart Congregational Church and both Stuart and Earlham Saddle Clubs. Peggy enjoyed horses and all animals and working on her flower garden. In the summers she enjoyed visiting Lake Okoboji and spending time talking and eating out with friends. She especially loved spending time with her Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren.
Peggy was preceded in passing by her parents and infant brother, Virgil.
Peggy is survived by her son, Richard (Judy) Alston of West Des Moines; grandchildren: Rick (Sue) Alston of Surprise, AZ, Kim (Tim) Harris of Coon Rapids, MN and Amy Alston of Glendale, AZ; great-grandchildren: Josh Alston, Aaron Harris, Amanda Harris and Alyssa Harris; and a host of other family and friends that will miss her dearly.
