Chuck grew up in Lorimor and attended Lorimor High School graduating with the class of 1958. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served honorably until his discharge in 1960. While enlisted he served on the USS Hancock near San Francisco. Following his discharge, he returned to Iowa and attended Southwestern Community College in Creston studying Structural Drafting.

The family lived in Winterset, Janesville, Wisconsin, Manley, Nebraska, and Patterson before lastly settling in Redfield in 1970. Chuck worked a variety of jobs but most of his working career was spent in the plumbing business.
