Obituary for Christine "Chris" Pace

Christine “Chris” Pace, 68, of Stuart passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at the Concord Care Center in Garner. Visitation will be held from 9-10 A.M. on Tuesday, February 28th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Funeral service will be held at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, February 28th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Services will be live-streamed on the Johnson Family Funeral Home Facebook Page (Facebook.com/JohnsonFamilyFH). Luncheon will follow the funeral service at the Stuart Methodist Church. Burial will follow at 2:30 P.M. at the Graceland Cemetery in Webster City. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Center. Chris was born January 16, 1955 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Harley and Phyllis (Gabrielson) Wertz. She attended school at Norway Community Schools until 1972 when the family moved to a farm near Lucas, Iowa. Chris graduated from Chariton Community Schools in 1973. She attended Des Moines Area Community College, studying Bookkeeping/Accounting. Following her 1974 graduation she worked at SMB Stage Lines in Des Moines, Iowa. On September 25, 1977 she was united in marriage to L. Dean Pace. After a short time of driving an over-the-road semi with her husband, in March of 1978 Chris became the Office Manager for Genetics Unlimited, a purebred hog sales company. August 11, 1983 the couple’s only child Jason Curtis was born. In November, 1985 they opened Pace Video in Stuart, Iowa. The couple divorced in 1992. Chris owned and managed the video store until February, 2004 when she sold the business. In 2005, Chris started at Wells Fargo as a Retail Department Collector then in 2006 became supervisor in the Retail Collections Department until her retirement in 2021.


Chris enjoyed 13 years as a Cub Scout leader, Boy Scout Assistant Scoutmaster and also held several positions on the Troop 167 committee as her son Jason worked to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. The highlight for Chris was hiking with the troop for nine days at Philmont Scout Ranch, New Mexico. Chris enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Chris enjoyed traveling; showing Jason the world, traveling around Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Missouri, Arkansas, Israel, and Egypt. She also enjoyed fly-fishing and taking care of her home.


Chris was preceded in death by her father, Harley Wertz; mother, Phyllis Wertz; and sister, Gloria Braner.


She leaves behind her son, Jason (Alysen) Pace of Garner; brother, Michael (Carol) Wertz of Osage; step-son, Brent Pace of Tonkawa, OK; grandchildren, Bella and Grant Pace of Garner; step-grandchildren: Emily (Conner) Sackett, Dawson, Lane Pace and Perry; and a host of extended family.
