Dale was born on December 12, 1932 to Hugh and Hazel (Short) Harlan in Stuart, Iowa. He attended school in Menlo and graduated from Menlo High School with the class of 1951. While in high school Dale played football, basketball and played trumpet in the band. Following graduation Dale attended Drake University before enlisting in the United States Army, where he served honorably from 1953-1955. He was assigned to Army Field Artillery working with cannons. Following his discharge he returned home to farm with his father outside of Menlo. On November 25, 1955 Dale was united in marriage to Anna “Tulle” Hansen in Luck, Wisconsin. The young couple made their home on the family farm. Dale farmed his whole life, working with both crops and livestock.
In his spare time, Dale enjoyed bowling, working with computers, listening to 50’s music, watching basketball and western movies.
