Danne "Dan" Cain, a cherished soul known for his handy skills, passionate heart, and adventurous spirit, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2024, in Stuart, Iowa. Born as a twin on April 1, 1954, in Des Moines, Iowa, Dan's journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering zest for the great outdoors.
Dan's early years were spent in the vibrant community of Des Moines, where he attended North High School. His commitment to military service was evident when he chose to join the United States Marines in 1975. Both of his parents were Marines as well, his mother, for a short time before becoming pregnant. During his time in the military, he received his GED and proudly served his country for a total of 12 and a half years. Dan's military career took him to various locations, including Parris Island for boot camp, Cherry Point, the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan, instilling in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that would last a lifetime.
Upon returning to civilian life, Dan settled back into Iowa life, living in Des Moines and smaller towns including Peru, Patterson, and Earlham before finally making his home in Stuart in 1997. His professional life was as robust as his personal one, with a notable career as a pipe liner at Enron, now known as OneOK. Dan also worked for Ferrellgas, where he was known for his skill in hauling propane, on any country road and in any weather conditions. His colleagues will remember him as a man who could always be relied upon, on-call and ready to jump out of bed at a moment's notice, which is a true testament to his character.
Dan's love for life extended beyond his work. He was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures—tinkering with cars, fishing, and hunting. An animal lover at heart, he shared his home with a number of beloved pets over the years, mostly rescues. His wife would "surprise" him with a few rescues, with him saying, "What did you bring home now?" Some were supposed to be trimmed and bathed and rehomed, but most never left the house until they passed. His love for the outdoors was infectious, and he could often be found sharing this passion with his family and friends. He didn't know a stranger and would shoot the breeze with whomever would stay long enough to listen. His smile and laugh was just as infectious. He loved his music and could be seen singing in his car around town with the radio blaring. He loved many bands, including Creedence Clearwater Revival, Little River Band, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, AC/DC, Johnny Horton, and many songs from the 60's and beyond. Believe it or not, he also came to like a few rap songs that his daughter would frequently listen to.
Family was the cornerstone of Dan's world. He was a hard worker and made sure his family was taken care of. He is survived by his lifelong soulmate, Dawn Knox of Stuart, Iowa, who stood by his side through the many chapters of their lives together. His legacy continues through his loving family members, including his daughter, Marieta "Rita" Pillus and her husband Robert, of Stuart, Iowa; his cherished grandchildren, Camden "Punkin" Steele and Emily "Sweet Baby" Pillus; his brother, John Cain and his wife Wanda of Kansas; and his sister-in-law, Shaun Cain of Winterset. He is also survived by two "bonus daughters". When Rita was in high school, she made two lifelong friends, Angela Mason of Earlham, and Celeste Aldridge of Forest City, North Carolina. He welcomed them with open arms into the family and treated them as his own. He never called them Angie or Celeste. Rita would tell him she was at Angie's house and he would say, "Who?" She would then say "Angela" and only then would he know immediately who she was talking about. He affectionately gave Celeste the nickname of "Lesta" and said it with a zest that only he could do. It made her smile every time, as it does today. Dan also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom will greatly miss his presence.
Dan's life was a testament to the power of love, hard work, and the pursuit of happiness. Those who knew him will remember his handy nature, always ready to fix what was broken, and his passionate approach to life, embracing each moment with enthusiasm and he was usually whistling while doing it. His adventurous soul led him to explore, to seek out new experiences, and to cherish the beauty of the natural world.
Dan had some special people ready to greet him in the heavenly skies including his precious toddler son, Daniel Roy Cain, his parents, Roy and Elaine Cain, older brother Mike Cain, twin sister Dianne Bosch (older by 22 minutes), and many other relatives and friends.
As we bid farewell to Dan, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey filled with laughter, love, and countless memories. His spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his stories will be told for generations to come. Dan's passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy of kindness, adventure, and love will forever be etched in the lives of those he touched.
