Obituary for Darold Lee Berg
“All aboard!” The Great Conductor called. Darold handed in his ticket and boarded the heavenly train on Thursday, November 26, 2015, at the age of 73.
Darold Lee Berg was born on April 2, 1942 to Leslie and Vivian (White) Berg, and grew up on the farm north of Albert City, Iowa. From the time he was a small boy, he was fascinated by the train that ran through a corner of the property and would run out to wave at the engineer as it passed through. One day the engineer stopped and Darold got to ride the short run to the next town and back on the return trip. That began a life-long love affair with railroads, the steam locomotive era in particular.
Darold graduated from Albert City-Truesdale High School in 1961. Jesse Owens, four-time Olympic gold medalist from the 1936 Olympics was invited to be the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony. Due to his own abilities on the track team, Darold was chosen to host Mr. Owens throughout the day and introduce him at the graduation ceremonies.
Darold worked for HEG Painting, Cherokee, IA for over 30 years. He was active in model railroad clubs in Norwest Iowa and longtime supporter and member of the Colorado Railroad Museum. Darold was very knowledgeable in the history of trains as well as building train layouts. He also enjoyed antiquing and attending flea markets. Darold’s favorite vacations were spent in Colorado and his favorite train-ride was the Durango-Silverton route.
On February 25, 1995, Darold married Karen Marie (Brandt) Mauser. Darold is survived by his beloved wife, Karen, two children from a previous marriage, Jody (Kyle) Rupp of Gretna, NE, Chad (Melissa) Berg of Littleton, CO, step-children Edward (Ida Rindshoj) Mauser of Copenhagen, Denmark and Elizabeth (Michael) Franzmeier of Rembrandt, IA. Grandchildren Savanna Rupp, Aryn, Amanda, Dilyn and Bailey Berg, Cole and Emersyn Franzmeier and sister Karen Ann Berg of Aurora, CO, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, December 18, 2015 at the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 19, at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Darold Berg Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250.
