Dawnolem "Dawn" “Sissy” Marie Knox, a beacon of kindness and joy, passed away peacefully on her wedding anniversary of September 27, 2024, in Stuart, Iowa. Born on August 8, 1960, in Des Moines, Iowa, Dawn's infectious laughter and generous spirit were a gift to all who knew her throughout her 64 years of a life well-lived.
Dawn grew up in Des Moines, attending East High School before obtaining her GED, reflecting her belief in the power of education at any stage of life. Her formative years on the east side of Des Moines were just the beginning of an adventurous journey that saw her living in various towns across central Iowa, including Patterson, East Peru, and Earlham. However, it was the charming community of Stuart that Dawn would call home for the last three decades of her life.
On September 27, 1986, Dawn's heart found its soulmate when she married Danne Cain in Adel. Their paths later diverged, yet they remained close companions, a testament to the enduring nature of love and friendship. Dawn's legacy is carried on through her beloved daughter, Marieta "Rita" Pillus, and her husband, Robert; as well as her cherished grandchildren, Camden (Bubbles) Steele and Emily (Mommy) Pillus, who brought immeasurable joy and purpose to her days. Other survivors include her cousin, June Canfield, brothers, Robert (Carla) Knox, Jr, Craig (Terri) Knox and Mark (Jeni) Knox, a beloved brother-in-law, Wayne “Wayne-A-Kiss” Adamson, and two bonus daughters, Angie Mason and Celeste Aldridge. Dawn also leaves behind cousin, Deb (Austin) Brown, best friends PJ Prothero, Linda Hagler, Laura Jensen and a host of many special friends that will miss her greatly. She is preceded by, her father, Robert D. Knox, Sr., cousin Todd “Toddykins” Canfield and her lifelong soulmate, Danne Cain who she stood by through the years.
Professionally, Dawn contributed her meticulous skills and warm customer service to various establishments, including Sam's Club, Costco, and most recently, Dollar General. As a cashier and payroll clerk, she was not only efficient but also a friendly face that many looked forward to seeing during their routine shopping trips.
Dawn's interests were a mirror to her personality—modern, cheerful, and family-centered. An avid shopper, she delighted in exploring the latest deals on Temu and was known among her friends and family as a "tech junky," always equipped with the latest electronic gadgets. Walmart's aisles were her haven for window shopping, where she found simple pleasures and inspiration for her next get-together or family event.
Above all, Dawn's heart belonged to her grandchildren, Camden and Emily. Her days were brightest when spent with them, whether cheering on their achievements or simply enjoying their company. Her home was often filled with the sounds of their laughter and the classic television shows she adored, such as "The Waltons," "Little House on the Prairie," and a myriad of Hallmark Christmas movies that she watched with a twinkle in her eye.
Dawn will be remembered as a kind soul, a generous friend, and a woman with a sense of humor that could light up the darkest room. Her laughter was a melody that will resonate in the hearts of those who loved her, and her spirit of giving and love for her family will continue to inspire generations to come.
As we bid farewell to Dawn, we celebrate a life marked by genuine connections, a passion for life's simple joys, and the unwavering love for her family. Dawnolem "Dawn" Marie Knox was a remarkable woman who lived a full and beautiful life, and though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of kindness and laughter will forever be etched in our memories.
