While in school Don excelled in football, basketball, track and baseball. Don also enjoyed golfing, stating he only made it through school because he golfed with the teachers and coaches. On June 20, 1954 he was united in marriage to Ethel Summy at the Christian Church in Redfield. The couple made their home in Redfield before later moving to Stuart in 1968. Don was a member of the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, and the Lions Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering in his shop, going on RAGBRAI, working on community projects, bowling, Stuart-Menlo athletics and following the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel; parents, Loyd and Vivian; sons: Darwin, Doug, and Chris; grandchildren: Chad Miller and Carrie Arp; and siblings: Richard Kunkle, Betty Marsh, and Lavonne Frizzel.
