Donald Lee Freeland, 87, of Dallas Center passed away surrounded by his family on Monday, May 8, 2023. Graveside committal service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, May 25th at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
Donald was born on January 13, 1936 to Earl and Rosa (Kunz) Freeland in Jasper, Indiana. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served honorably, spending time on the USS Yorktown. He later moved to California where he began his career in law enforcement for the Fresno City Police. Later Donald worked for the California Highway Patrol, Central Wyoming College Law Department and lastly spending 25 years at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, for a total of 42 years in law enforcement. He was a longtime member of the Dallas Center American Legion Post 49 and many law enforcement organizations.
On April 30, 1960, Don was united in marriage to Jacqueline Munson in Fresno, California. To this union, three children were born Lisa, Donna, and Patrick. In his spare time, he enjoyed refinishing furniture, yard work and cooking. Donald could often be found smoking his pipe on his deck. Most of all, he treasured time he was able to spend with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Jacqueline of Dallas Center; children: Lisa (Randy) Howell of Dallas Center, Donna (Paul) Yoshida of Half Moon Bay, California, and Patrick (Kim) Freeland of Dallas Center; grandchildren: Michael Howell, Jonathan Steller, Daniel Howell, Allison Berg, Jessica Dietz, Jillian Martinez, Rachel Kelly, Jordan Yoshida, and Ryan Freeland; great-grandchildren: Kinley Steller, Amelia Howell, Kaia Steller, McKenzie Berg, Eliza Howell, Emmalyn Dietz, Peyton Berg, Isabella Howell, Analia Howell, Teddy Steller, Sloane Berg, Dakota Kelly, and Matilda Howell; and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
