Donald was born on April 10, 1932 to Verne and Georgieanna (Chittick) Roberts in Stuart, Iowa. When Donald was young, he enjoyed roller-skating which is where he met his future wife, Marilyn. While attending Stuart High School, he excelled at basketball and was the marching band major; he graduated with the class of 1950. After graduation, Donald took an interest in carpentry. His career as a carpenter, was profoundly influenced by his mentor, Cal Hammond, a skilled craftsman that he deeply respected and loved working next to.
On July 8, 1951, Donald was united in marriage to Marilyn Middleton in Stuart. In 1953, Donald enlisted in the United States Army where he achieved the rank of Corporal during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge in 1955, he and Marilyn started their family and his lifelong career of farming in rural Adair and Guthrie counties. Their busy work life involved milking dairy cattle, raising hogs, farming crops, and growing his Carpentry work.
The Roberts were blessed with four children: Bill, Shelene, Ted, and Larry. They also welcomed niece Christy and nephew Randy Roberts during summer and spring breaks. Donald was a long time member of the Adair County Farm Bureau, a member of the Stuart American Legion Stuart, I.O.O.F Odd Fellows and Rebekahs for 70+ years, and a dedicated member of 60 years to the First Congregational Church. He served on the Menlo School Board and later the Stuart-Menlo School Board. In his free time, he enjoyed attending all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s sports and school events. He was an avid card player, spending Tuesday evenings with friends at card club, and known to frequently slip cards under the table while playing with family. Donald was a loving father and grandfather and his dedication to family earned him the honor Father of the Year at the Stuart Good Egg Days in 2018. Donald was a man of light and love and selflessness. A man of few but impactful words, who was easy to talk to and easier to love. Rarely, you would leave a conversation without hearing his airy, contagious laugh.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Everett Roberts and great-grandson, John Donald Gomke.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 72 years, Marilyn.
