Obituary for Douglas Schroeder

Douglas Leroy Schroeder, Retired Navy Master Chief Petty Officer, 75 of Earlham passed away on Monday, January 9, 2023. Memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 16th at Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a bench at Zion Church, National Cancer Center or the American Heart Association. Doug was born on December 19, 1946 to Albert and Betty (Swatosh) Schroeder in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in Marion, IA and attended Marion schools graduating with the class of 1965. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy from 1966-1992. While in the Navy he served in Tennessee, Washington DC, Iceland, London, New Orleans, Alaska and aboard the USS America; along with many other places throughout his 27 year career. After his retirement, In 1992 he settled in Earlham, Iowa.


On November 20, 2001 he was united in marriage to Patricia Kilburn. Doug and Pat enjoyed traveling the world and Doug thoroughly enjoyed planning each trip. He was a long time member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter where he was very active in the church. In his spare time, he enjoyed cooking, baking bread, electronics, computers, phones and technology.


He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Schroeder; and his great nephew Benjamin Smith.


Doug leaves behind his wife, Patricia; daughter, Celeste (Billy) Aldridge; mother, Betty Marsh; sisters: Sarah (Don) Olson and Jacquelyn (Russell) Glasgow; step-children, Paul (Stephanie) Arduser and Kelly (David) Burns. He loved and enjoyed spending time with all of his grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. Along with host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
