Eric William Tiernan, 67 of Stuart passed away surrounded by his family on Monday, October 2, 2023. Visitation will be held from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, October 5th at the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, October 6th at the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. Burial will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the All Saints Catholic Church or the Gammon Barn (Hereford Cattle Barn) at the Iowa State Fair and/or the Hospice of the Midwest. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com. Eric’s wish was for everyone to be in casual attire for the visitation and funeral.
Eric was born on January 5, 1956 to Bill and Joanne (Schrodt) Tiernan in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up in Stuart and attended Stuart-Menlo Schools graduating with the class of 1974. On November 24, 1979 he was united in marriage to Margaret Gomez at the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. To this union four children were born: Jennifer, Patrick, Matthew and Michael. Eric was a longtime Stuart businessman owning: Town & Country Insurance, Stuart Fremont Theatre, Perry Grand Theatre, and Stuart Fitness. In addition, he also farmed and raised Hereford cattle. Eric was an integral leader in the development and the growth of the town of Stuart through his involvement in numerous community projects that have made a positive impact for decades. In 2018, Eric was selected to be the Stuart Citizen of the Year.
Eric was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church, Stuart Enterprise for Economic Development, Midwest Partnership, Iowa Cattlemen Association and Iowa Hereford Association. In his spare time he enjoyed camping, grilling, coffee group at McDonalds and especially spending time with his family and friends. He also treasured his donut Sundays with his grandchildren. Eric was always a constant caregiver, especially with his mother.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Tiernan; and siblings: Colleen Otto, Tom Tiernan and Peter Tiernan.
He leaves behind his wife, Margaret of Stuart; children: Jennifer, Patrick, Matthew (Shelby McDaniel) and Michael all of Stuart; mother, Joanne Tiernan of Stuart; grandchildren: Alyssa Kuehl (Logan Shield), George, Violet, Eleanor and Norma Tiernan; great-grandchild, Haven Shield; siblings: Kit Tiernan (Kathy Corbin) of Marshalltown, Ellen (Ken) Iwai of Chicago, Angela Buskohl (Randy See) of Rowley, Shane (Cathy) Tiernan of Polk City, IA, Laura (Scott) Dankof of Westcliff, CO, Nancy (Dennis) Munro of Wheaton, IL, Martha (Don) Scheckel of Beltsville, MD., Rob (Eliziane) Tiernan of Marshalltown, IA, Sara (Sam) Reichart of Ankeny, IA and Rachel (David) Tegeler of Des Moines, IA; brother-in-law, Bruce Otto of Grinnell, IA; and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
