Evelyn Joy Hougham was born November 7, 1940 to Joseph and Ruth Arlee (Wigton) Foley. She grew up on a farm south of Earlham, attended Country School through 3rd grade and then in 4th grade attended the Earlham Community School District and graduated from Earlham High School in 1959.
On April 10, 1960 she was united in marriage to Norman Hougham. Norman and Evelyn started their life together in Des Moines and lived there for 12 years before moving back to Earlham in 1972. While living in Des Moines their daughter, Jill, was born.
Through the years, Evelyn was an active member of the Earlham Church of Christ, Earlham Eastern Star Chapter, and served on the Pioneer Place board of directors. Except for the two years after Jill was born, Evelyn worked outside the home. She spent time working at the Earlham Savings Bank, a small real estate firm in Adel, and various life insurance companies in the Des Moines area. In 2021, she retired from BASE, a small family owned sales office in Adel, after 20 years of working with their team.
For many years, Evelyn and Norman were fortunate to stay in the Florida Keys during the winter months. From watching dolphins from their dock to eating Key Lime Pie, the Keys quickly became a special place for them and their family members who were able to come visit them.
Evelyn’s greatest treasure in life was her family and the time she spent with them. In both Earlham and Waukee, Evelyn loved to host family for holidays, and found joy in making sure she included everyone’s favorites in the meal.
After her husband, Norman, passed away in 2005, Evelyn moved to Waukee where she had lived for the past 19 years. She enjoyed the people in her neighborhood, their social events and weekly outings to a favorite restaurant, and the friendships she established.
Evelyn was called home to be with her Heavenly Father and reunite with Norman on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the age of 84. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter Jill and son-in-law, Jay Van Woerkom, along with her granddaughter, Kendall (Van Woerkom) Ried, Kendall’s husband, Jesse and her new great-grandson, Wyatt Jay Ried.
Evelyn is also survived by her brother Billy Foley (Becky) of Urbandale and sister Janet (Don) Cruikshank of Johnston.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Monday, June 9th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Earlham. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 10th at the Earlham Church of Christ. Burial will be held in the Earlham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Earlham Fire & Rescue and/or the Earlham Public Library.
