Evelyn Irene Maas, 94, of Stuart, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Stuart Community Care Center. Visitation will be held June 30th, 2018 from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Stuart. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. following the Visitation. Memorial contributions may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Evelyn was born March 8,1924, to her parents Royal and Nora (Reed) McNelly in Monteith, Iowa. She grew up south of Menlo where she attended rural country school and graduated from Greenfield High School with the class of 1941. She was united in marriage to Donald H. Maas on June 27, 1942 at the Jefferson Center United Methodist Church. To this union three children were born, Donald, Ronald, and Judy. She lived in Earlham for over 40 years before making her home in Stuart in 2006. Evelyn was employed at Bankers Life in 1964 and retired March 31st, 1989 from Principal Financial Group as an underwriter.
Evelyn was a member of the 5x80 Country Club, Jefferson Center United Methodist Church, and would meet with the Principal Retired group every month. She also enjoyed meeting with her classmates from Greenfield occasionally for lunch. Evelyn enjoyed house sitting and dog watching in Des Moines for many years, golfing, collecting salt and pepper shakers, and loved spending time with family, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Royal and Nora McNelly; husband of 42 years, Donald; sisters: Bethine McNelly (infant) and Beverly Harmon; grandson: Timothy Maas; companion: Greg Comstock; Greg’s son: Gib Comstock and his wife, Judy Comstock.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, Donald Maas of Stuart, IA; Ronald (Nyla) Maas of Menlo, IA; and Judy Van Winkle of St. Joe, MO; Candace Maas (Roger Anderson) of Ventura, IA; sister, Ruth Thornburg of Hartford, IA; grandchildren: Cheryl Marks (Jeff), Donald Maas (Amber), Stacy Maas (Steve Ferguson), Anne Maas and Ricky Van Winkle; great-grandchildren: Kendall (Lucas) Maas, Reily Maas, Zach (Emily), Jordan (Morgan), Grace and Avery Marks, Sydney and Emily Wagner, Alex and Chase Maas and Myriah and Chrissy Van Winkle. Also a big part of her life are Greg’s grandchildren, which she see’s as her own, Doug (Susan) Comstock, Caron (Charlie) Crevling, Cathy Comstock and Andrew (Liz) Comstock and all of their children; and many nieces & nephews.
