Garry Leroy Davis, a cherished soul and lifelong resident of Redfield, Iowa, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025, at the age of 82 in Knoxville, Iowa. Born on September 26, 1942, in Redfield, he was a beacon of kindness, handiness, and creativity that illuminated the lives of those around him.
Raised by his loving mother, Opal Dwinell, Garry's early life in Redfield was filled with the warmth of a close-knit family. He attended Redfield High School, where he laid the foundations of his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and skill. Garry answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the United States Army. Stationed in Germany during the Cold War, he served from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1959, an experience that shaped him in profound ways.
Upon returning to civilian life, Garry embarked on a career that showcased his exceptional work ethic and versatility. For 27 years, he was a dedicated maintenance man at Oscar Mayer in Perry, until the plant's closure. Not one to rest on his laurels, Garry then turned to truck driving, a profession he embraced until his well-deserved retirement.
A jack of all trades, Garry had a remarkable ability to fix anything put before him. His hands were rarely still, always busy at work on a new project or repair. His artistic spirit shone brightly through his metalwork, crafting and welding creations that were not only functional but also infused with his unique artistic touch. An avid gun collector, Garry's passion for precision and detail was evident in every aspect of his life.
Garry's legacy is lovingly carried on by his children, Stacy (Ben) Stewart of Boone, Iowa, Tony Davis of Redfield, Iowa, and Tonya (James) Davis of Dallas Center, Iowa. His grandchildren, George Stewart, Elaine Meyers, Brandon Davis, Beverly McKenna, and Denver Davis, as well as his great-grandson, Asher Davis, will forever cherish the memories and lessons he imparted. Garry also leaves behind his dear sisters, Carolyn LeFleur and Janie Coldiron, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom will miss him greatly.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Opal (Freiberg) Dwinell, daughter, Susan Allbee, his brother Pete Davis, and his brothers-in-law Joseph LeFleur and Richard (Dick) Coldiron. Garry's absence will be deeply felt, but his influence will continue to resonate through the lives of those he touched.
Garry's life was a testament to the virtues of kindness, ingenuity, and creativity. He faced each day with a can-do attitude and a heart ready to help others. His legacy is one of love, dedication, and the joy of making and fixing, a legacy that will be honored and remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In his passing, we are reminded of the value of a life well-lived, one that is full of passion, service, and the simple joy of creating. Garry Leroy Davis was a man who built a life as sturdy and as beautiful as the metal sculptures he so lovingly crafted. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit will forever be a part of the community he held so dear.
