Gary was born on June 19, 1940 to Ralph and Marjorie (Stanley) Speedling at the family farm outside of Casey. He attended country schools and later attended Adair-Casey High School with the class of 1958. Following high school, he worked at a gas station in Casey and a dairy plant in Des Moines. Most of his career was spent at Armstrong Tire in Des Moines working for 35+ years until his retirement and later working at Earlham Building Center for five years.
On April 16, 1961 he was united in marriage to Sandra Lowe at the Adair United Methodist Church. To this union four children were born: Brian, Jolleen, Teresa and Steven. The couple made their home in Des Moines before settling in Earlham in 1969. In his spare time, Gary enjoyed anything outdoors, gardening, yard work and attending flea markets. Most of all he enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his friends and family. Gary took after his father by sitting outside on his porch and waving at everyone as they went by.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Marjorie Speedling; wife, Sandra Speedling; grandsons: Connor, Payton and Ryker Speedling; and sister, Caryl Taylor.
He leaves behind his children: Brian (Marlene) Speedling of Johnston, Jolleen (Roger) McGee of West Des Moines, Teresa (David) Smith of Earlham and Steven (Denise) Speedling of Earlham; grandchildren: Brent Speedling, Brandon Speedling, Carissa McGee, Ryan McGee, Stephanie McGee, Sarah (Javen) Nekola, Tiffany Smith, Joshua (Lydia) Smith, Rachel Smith, Joel Smith, Amanda Smith, Jaxen Speedling and Preslee Speedling; great-grandchildren, Isabelle Nekola and Eleanor Smith; brother-in-law, Larry Taylor; sister-in-law, Carla (Don) Eggen and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
