Guelda Jean King, age 97, formerly of Johnston, passed away May 15, 2024 at the Stuart Community Care Center. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at Oakland Cemetery in Centerville, Iowa. An open house celebration will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m., on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at the home of Linda and Brian Kading at Sun Valley Lake, Ellston, Iowa.
Guelda was born August 31, 1926 in Exline, Iowa to Edward and Ora Cline. She was married on November 15, 1946 to C. Richard (Dick) King for 51 years. They lived in the Des Moines area for 40 years, primarily in Urbandale, before retiring to Bella Vista, Arkansas in 1987. They had two children, Kenneth and Linda. Guelda moved to Johnston, Iowa in 2008.
In Iowa, Guelda worked as a craft designer and developer at National Handcraft (“Fad of the Month Club”), and as an executive secretary at General Growth Corp. and the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care. In Arkansas, she worked as an executive secretary at Walmart Corporation and, later in life, part-time as an assistant at the Bentonville Public Library because she enjoyed interacting with the kids.
Guelda was active in several Urbandale organizations while raising her family, including Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Garden Club, PTA, and the Urbandale Church of Christ. She enjoyed time with her family, especially lake time at Sun Valley Lake, Ellston, Iowa, with her daughter’s family. She played bridge and golf, enjoyed reading, and was a wonderful seamstress.
Guelda is survived by her daughter, Linda Jean King (Brian) Kading of Scottsdale, Arizona (formerly of Johnston, Iowa), her grandchildren Kristine (Harry) Dixon and Kevin Kading (Erica Cooper); great grandchildren Ian Dixon, and Thea and Ray Kading; her sister, Patricia Hansen, of Issaquah, Washington, her daughter-in-law Nancy King of Plymouth, Minnesota and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, her son, Kenneth, her parents Edward and Ora, her brother Chester Cline, and a nephew, Todd Hansen.
Thanks to the loving caregivers at the Stuart Community Care Center, and St. Croix Hospice. Thanks also to Vivian Little, of Stuart, especially for your neighborly friendship to Mom the past two years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johnston Public Library Foundation in honor of Guelda.
