Obituary for Hazel S Barnes
Hazel S. Barnes, 85, of Dexter passed away on Friday, July 24, 2015 at the Stuart Community Care Center. Memorial services will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, July 28th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Dexter. Private burial will take place at the Fairview Cemetery near Stuart at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Hazel Barnes Memorial Fund and sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Hazel was born October 12, 1929 to Virgil and Alta Mae (Dupey) Devilbiss in rural Redfield. She grew up in Redfield and attended Redfield Schools, graduating from Redfield High School. Following graduation she was united in marriage to Howard Barnes on September 13, 1946 in Dexter. To this union five children were born: Mary Lee, Sarabelle, Rosie, Marge and Rodney. Hazel worked for Look Magazine and assisted Howard on the farm. The family moved into Dexter in 1960 where most of her time was spent raising the five children.
Hazel and Howard spent many summers camping and wintering in Hot Springs, Arkansas. She enjoyed playing bingo and scratch tickets.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; son, Rodney; daughter, Mary Lee; and all of her brothers and sisters.
Hazel leaves behind her three daughters, Sarabelle Donnelly of Greenfield, Rosie (Ron) Morrison of Stuart, Marge Gomez of Earlham; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and a host of family and friends that will miss her dearly.
