Obituary for Helen Muriel Bancroft
Helen Muriel (Mortensen) Bancroft, 90, of Stuart passed away November 9, 2018 at the Community Care Center in Stuart. Visitation Tribute will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home – Stuart Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the First Congregational Church in Stuart. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Anita. Memorials may be made to the Stuart Congregate Meals and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Helen was born February 28, 1928 in Coon Rapids, Iowa to Otto Theodore and Alma Gretchen (Paxson) Mortensen. She was one of 8 children born to this union. In 1939, the family moved from Coon Rapids to a farm outside of Anita where Helen attended and graduated from Anita High School with the class of 1945. Helen taught at a rural country school before being united in marriage to Thad Andrew “Andy” Moore Jr. on June 13, 1948 in Anita. To this union 8 children were born. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm southwest of Stuart and later, farms near Brayton and Guthrie Center before making their home in the Stuart area. Helen cleaned a business office uptown in Stuart, cooked at the Stuart Bowling Alley, worked at the Stuart School while some of the kids attended there, worked at Al’s Super Value and the Stuart Laundromat, worked at the Redfield Brickyard and McDonald’s before retiring. She belonged to the Poetry Club in Stuart and helped at Congregate Meals. Helen enjoyed working with her flowers, reading, attending ceramic classes, taking walks and crossword puzzles. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Andy Moore Jr. and Glen Bancroft, and three sisters, June Haley, Beatrice Suplee and Agnes Kaufmann.
Helen leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved children, Lois (Gary) Harmon of Polk City, Iowa, Carol Bennett of Omaha, Nebraska, Tim (Jill) Moore of Bondurant, Iowa, Tom Moore of Stuart, Iowa, Susan Wallace of Menlo, Iowa, Janie (Robert) Lawson of Grimes, Iowa, Ann (Tony) Zwiener of Indiantown, Florida, and Liz (Mark) Van Wyk of Urbandale; siblings, Charles Mortensen of Atlantic, Iowa, Grace Gard of Atlantic, Iowa, Norma Burnham of Marion, Iowa and Karen (Bob) Kiaser of Muscatine, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild all of whom will miss her greatly.
