Obituary for Herbert Gibson
Herbert William Gibson, 78, of Stuart, Iowa passed away Monday, September 4, 2017 at his home. A graveside service will be held 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 14th in the Calvary Cemetery in Stuart. Full Military Honors will be rendered at the gravesite. Memorial contributions may be made to the Herbert Gibson Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Herb, as he was known by his family and friends, was born December 30, 1938 in Stuart, Iowa to Harold “Hoot” Wright and Margaret Julia (Conroy) Gibson. He grew up in Stuart and graduated from Stuart High School with the class of 1957. On August 22, 1961, Herb enlisted into the United States Coast Guard and during this time was stationed in Cape May, New Jersey & Juneau, Alaska before being honorably discharged on August 20, 1965. Following his discharge, Herb enrolled at Des Moines Technical School and was trained in Automotive and Transmission and then later studied to become a Real Estate Broker. Herb was united in marriage to Charlene (Cook) Gibson on October 15, 1966 at All Saints Church in Stuart, and the couple made their home in Des Moines. Herb worked at Iowa Packing Company, Firestone Tire and Rubber and Ed James Real Estate. In 1974 they moved back to Stuart, and shortly after their four children, Symantha, twins Sara and Samuel, and Seth were born. Herb was self-employed for over twenty years operating Herb Gibson Siding, Inc. before retiring. Herb was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and Stuart American Legion. He enjoyed the outdoors and could be found mowing, camping, walking, or watching a good St. Louis Cardinals game. The last fourteen years he and Charlene spent the winter months in Arizona with their Far Horizons RV Village family, where his social calendar was always full of activities and events.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Margaret Gibson, father and mother-in-law Lew and Lucille Cook, brother, David Gibson, sister-in-law Karen Cook Ashby, brother-in-law Kenneth Webb, and niece Rowena Webb.
Herb leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Charlene of Stuart; children, Symantha (Neal) Crawford of Stuart, Sara Gibson of Stuart, Samuel (Flavia) Gibson of Middleton, Wisconsin and Seth (Erin) Gibson of Clive; grandchildren, Liam & Larissa Crawford, Jacob Gibson, Blake, Ziva & Bryce Gibson, and Payton & Graysen Gibson; two sisters-in-law, Rose Webb of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Karen Gibson of Pleasantville, Iowa; brother-in-law, Bob Ashby of Champlin, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
