Obituary for James Leon Wahlert Sr.
James Leon Wahlert Sr., 65, of Dexter passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the VA Hospital in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 6-8 P.M. on Wednesday, October 1st at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, October 2nd at the Calvary Assembly of God in Dexter. Burial will be at Dexter City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Freedom For Youth Center and/or Fairview Church, in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 57, Dexter, IA 50070. Jim was born on January 9, 1949 to Leon and Goldie (Rosenburg) Wahlert. He attended grade school at Dexter, Iowa and high school at Redfield, Iowa. He joined the US Air Force in 1968 and served during the Vietnam War.
He was married to Marlys Hauschulz on February 27, 1971 and to this union two sons were born, James Jr. and Kevin. Jim worked for the State of Iowa for 28 years at the Woodward Resource Center in Woodward, Iowa.
Jim loved the outdoors; he loved camping, fishing, hunting and pontooning at Saylorville Lake with his family. He was also an avid gardener. Jim and Marlys canned many vegetables from their garden. He so enjoyed sharing his bountiful harvest with family and friends. Jim loved working in his shop fixing all kinds of small engines for family and friends.
He was a scoutmaster for the Dexter and Redfield Scout Troops. He went to Philmont and Camp Mitigwa with his sons and scout troops.
He loved to bake especially homemade buns, cinnamon rolls and muffins. He also won 3rd place at the Iowa State Fair for his Grandma Wahlert’s oatmeal raisin cookies.
Jim took oil paint classes from Ruth Goldsberry for a number of years and especially enjoyed painting wildlife, barns and landscapes. He shared his paintings with family and friends. He also loved playing cards, pinochle and cribbage were his favorites. He so enjoyed playing cribbage with his good friend Fred Morford. Jim and Marlys learned to square dance and were members of the Casey Snappy Steppers. He also volunteered at the Freedom for Youth in Stuart, Iowa. Jim loved watching his grandkids play soccer. Jim had a great passion for his faith in Christ and was very active in the life of the church.
Jim is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marlys; children, James Wahlert Jr. and Kevin (Stephanie) Wahlert; grandchildren, Alex, Emma, Noah, and Halle Wahlert; sister, Shirley (Crest) Jones; and many nieces, nephews, family and a host of friends that will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard.
