James Samuel Rhoten, 56, of Dexter (formerly of Redfield) passed away at his home on July 18, 2018. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday, July 22, 2018 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory – Dexter Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 23, 2018 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory – Dexter Chapel.
Sam, as he was known by family and friends, was born January 4, 1962 in Dexter, Iowa to James Edward and Karen Jo Baker Rhoten. He grew up in Redfield and graduated from Dexfield High School with the class of 1980. While in school, Sam enjoyed all sports especially wrestling, track, and football. Following high school, he enrolled at Hawkeye Tech College where he received his associates degree. Sam lived most of his life in Redfield before moving to Dexter in 2015. Throughout his life, Sam worked a variety of jobs around Dallas and Polk county. He was a life long member of the United Methodist Church in Redfield. Sam enjoyed many things in life, but none of them were more important than his three daughters, family, and friends. He loved watching his beloved Vikings, Iowa, and Iowa State, gardening, and was an avid reader.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Rhoten and Karen Jo (Baker) Rhoten.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, daughters, Emily (Bryce) McColloch of Redfield, Hannah Rhoten (Shawn Harrison) of Adel, and Jessica (Jake) Vogel of Des Moines; grandchildren, Marley, Zadie, Joey, Leilah, Payton, Jamie and Jilly; siblings, Linda (Bob) Smithson of Redfield, Connie (Cory) Sloss of Adel and Jack Rhoten of West Des Moines, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and his many friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
