James William Strauss, 88 of Clive formerly of Dexter, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at Woodlands Creek Assisted Living in Clive. Graveside funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, January 21st at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Dexter. Please note the change in venue is due to poor weather conditions expected. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to UnityPoint Hospice and/or the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, IA 50250. James was born on April 28, 1931 to John and Ellen (Danielson) Strauss in Burlington, Iowa. He attended Burlington Schools. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1951 and served as a Radio Operator during the Korean War earning three Bronze Stars. Following his honorable discharge, he began working at Northwestern Bell where he worked for 36 years before retiring.
James married Margaret McCannon on June 20, 1954 in Burlington. After marriage, they lived in Burlington and Davenport, before relocating to Des Moines and lastly retiring at Diamondhead Lake. He enjoyed fishing, working in his wood shop and was especially skilled to fix almost anything.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; brother, Edward Strauss and granddaughter, Christina Strauss.
James leaves behind his children: Jeff (Phyllis) Strauss of Plano, TX, Jay (Brenda) Strauss of Dallas, GA, Jerry (Becky) Strauss of West Des Moines, Julie (Jeff) Smith of Reno, NV, and Eric (Amie) Strauss of Dunkerton; 14 grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
