Joanne Rose Tiernan, born on July 19, 1929, at St. Catherine's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on
May 1, 2024, in Stuart, Iowa. She was the beloved daughter of Hubert Nicholas Schrodt and Edna Elna Jones.
Joanne's devotion to her family was unwavering. She was a loving wife to her late husband, William Robert
Tiernan, whom she married on February 3, 1951, at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines. William passed
away on March 5, 1990. Joanne's love extended to her role as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and
great-great-grandmother, a testament to her enduring love and care.
Joanne was not just a part of her community, she was an active and proud member. She attended Iowa State
Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, and throughout her life, she worked as a Dairy
Farmer's Wife and at H.N. Schrodt Enterprises. Her involvement extended to All Saints Catholic Church and
Catholic Daughters, where she found solace and community. Joanne's impact was recognized when she was
named Mother of the Year in 1967. Her wide range of hobbies and interests included reading, puzzles,
crocheting, china painting, and daily tea parties with her beloved dog, Tippy, which further enriched her life.
Joanne was preceded in death by her beloved husband William, parents Hubert and Edna Schrodt, sister
Jacquelyn Anderson, brother Nicholas Schrodt, daughter Colleen Otto, and sons Eric, Thomas, and Peter
Tiernan.
Joanne will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her children: Christopher Tiernan Sr. (Kathy Corbin)
of Marshalltown; Ellen Tiernan (Ken Iwai) of Chicago; Angela Buskohl (Randy See) of Rowley; Shane (Cathy)
Tiernan of Polk City; Laura (Scott) Dankof of Westcliffe, Colorado; Nancy (Dennis) Munro of Wheaton, Illinois;
Martha (Don) Scheckel of Beltsville, Maryland; William Robert Jr. (Eliziane) Tiernan of Marshalltown; Sara
(Sam) Reichart of Ankeny; Rachel (David) Tegeler of Des Moines. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law,
Donna Miller of Winfield, Missouri, daughter-in-law, Margret Tiernan of Stuart, and son-in-law Bruce Otto of
Grinnell. Joanne leaves behind a legacy of 46 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-
grandchildren.
Joanne’s expressed wish for the future is a world where everyone loves one another and that her family can
spread love in their own worlds so that, like a pebble cast into a still pond, their effect will ripple out. Above
all, she wanted her family to have faith in God and the two main commandments: Love God above all things
and your neighbor as yourself.
