John William Doherty, 82 of Grimes passed away on October 7, 2019 at his home. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M. on Thursday, October 10th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, October 11th at All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. Burial with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery in Stuart. John was born on February 9, 1937 to Paul and Irene (Strickler) Doherty in Stuart, Iowa. He grew up in Stuart and attended Stuart High School graduating with the class of 1955. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Army, serving honorably until his discharge from the US Army Reserves in 1961. John married his first wife Barbara in 1957. Following his discharge, he worked for the Iowa Parcel Service until 1982. He later opened Delaware Garage and owned and operated until his retirement. John later married his wife Amor in March, 2006 in the Philippines. He lived outside of Grimes since 1966.
John loved cars and especially racing. He attended many NHRA and NASCAR races over the years. He enjoyed working on AMC Cobra Replicas with his son, Mark. He also loved fishing, spending many hours at Diamondhead Lake. Most of all he treasured time he was able to spend with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark Doherty Sr.; and siblings: Dan Doherty, Paul Doherty, Barbara Doherty, James Doherty and Mary Hayes.
John leaves behind his loving wife, Amor; children, Sherry (Paul) Stienessen and Debbie Doherty; grandchildren: Arthur (Sara) Kern, Alanna (Duan) Trinh, Kyle Herrity, Bo Herrity, Tony Overlin, Merrell Overlin, Mark Doherty Jr., and Brianna Smith; great-grandchildren: Jaden and Natalie Kern, Mabel and Ruby Trinh, Natalia and Harley Wright, Jaylen, Ellen and Angel Hayden, Junena and Sally Sue Overlin; special friend, Juan “Hondo” Antonio; siblings: Patsy Purviance, Alice Alexander, Dick Doherty, Ellen King, Kenny Doherty and Teresa Wells; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
