Obituary for Jon Harlan "Jake" Rote
Jon Harlan “Jake” Rote, of Stuart passed away on February 10, 2019 at University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation in Des Moines. A Gathering of Family and Friends/Memorial Service will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 1, 2019 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home – Stuart Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa VA or The Shriner’s Hospital and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, IA 50250. Jake, as he was known by family and friends was born on February 23, 1947 to Delbert and Helen (White) Rote in Dexter, Iowa. He attended Stuart Schools and graduated from Stuart High School with the class of 1967. Following Jon enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam from November, 1967 to August, 1969. After his honorable discharge he returned to Stuart and later moving to Garland, Texas. He worked for 25 years at the Hella Shriner’s Temple in Garland. In 1984, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Thompson in Stuart. In his previous years Jon enjoyed hanging out on hoods corner and most recently sitting in the Stuart City park.

Jon loved fishing, mushroom hunting and looking for eagles and deer with his nephew, Brian Harris and many friends. He enjoyed photography, often taking his camera on long walks in nature. Jon treasured time spent with family and friends at picnics and enjoying a Diet Coke at Johnny’s. He was a 35 year member of A.A.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Richard Rote, Dennis Rote and David Rote; sisters, Cleo Templeman and Sandra Porter; brother-in-law’s, Kenneth Harris and Cleveland Charles Porter; nephews, Michael Templeman and Ryan Miller; niece, Deborah Harris Miller and her husband Rick Miller.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl of Stuart; sisters, Cozette Harris of Stuart and Mary Sliger and husband, Bill of Rosemead, California; sister-in-laws, Cindy Rote-Crane of Dexter and Bonnie Rote of Redfield; brother-in-law, Marvin Templeman of Casey; son, Troy Templeman of Des Moines; granddaughters, Kaylee and Emily; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
