Mary Kathleen (Edwards) Schiller, affectionately known as Kathy to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 86. Born on August 18, 1937, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to Arthur Edwards, Sr. and Mary Jane (Henson) Edwards.
Kathy grew up in the heart of Lynchburg, where she attended Lynchburg High School. Her formative years in Virginia laid the foundation for a lifetime of kindness and a nurturing spirit. It was also where she met the love of her life, Everett Eugene Schiller. The couple wed on July 5, 1963, and shared a loving marriage until Gene's passing in 2019. Together, they embarked on a journey that would see them plant roots in Casey, Iowa in 1971, and eventually settle in Des Moines in 1989, where they created a home filled with love and laughter.
A dedicated mother and homemaker, Kathy raised two sons: David Schiller of Adel, Iowa; Michael Schiller of Des Moines, Iowa. Kathy also had one son Arthur (Sue) Newcomb, Jr. of Madison Heights, Virginia. Her family was the centerpiece of her life, and she delighted in the joys of grandmotherhood to Nathan Schiller, Jonathon Schiller, Arthur Newcomb, III, and Stephany Krantz.
Kathy worked as a Certified Nurse’s Aide at a local nursing home, where her kindness and loving touch brought comfort to many during their time of need. Her work was not just a job; it was a manifestation of her innate desire to help and connect with others.
She was also a cherished sister-in-law to Kenneth (Barbara) Schiller, Carol Seela, and Marlene Horacek. Her bond with her family members was fortified by mutual respect and affection, and she held a special place in the hearts of her extended family.
Described by those who knew her as kind, friendly, and loving, Kathy's presence was a beacon of positivity. Her smile and gentle demeanor were constants in a changing world, and her ability to listen and empathize made her a trusted confidante and friend.
Kathy's legacy is one of compassion and tenderness. Her unwavering love for her family, her dedication to her work, and her passion for the simple pleasures of life will continue to inspire those she left behind. As we say goodbye to Kathy, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of moments that will be cherished and remembered with fondness.
Kathy's passing marks the end of an era but also the beginning of a new chapter as her spirit lives on through her family and the many lives she touched. While we mourn the loss of such a remarkable woman, we take comfort in knowing that her legacy of love, kindness, and warmth will continue to bloom like the flowers in the garden she so lovingly tended.
Kathy is now reunited with her beloved Gene, her son Scott, and other dear family members who preceded her in death. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will remain a guiding light for all who were fortunate enough to know her. Rest in peace, Kathy; your story is one of love.
