Obituary for L. Marie Holmes
Leona Marie Thomas Holmes was born to Forrest O. Thomas and Eva Josephine (Hall) Thomas. After 10 years of marriage, Marie was born not breathing. After giving her “mouth to mouth” she survived.

Marie began attending country school and attended high school in Stuart, graduating in 1948.

During high school she began dating Dale Eugene Holmes and they married on May 8, 1949. To this union two girls were born. Beth Ann German, 1951; and Sherri Lee Holmes, 1955. Marie joined the Menlo Methodist Church upon marriage to Dale and was very active in the church, decorating the altar, sewing costumes, cooking. She was also a Sunday school teacher and member of the A-O-Kiya club.

Marie enjoyed bowling on a women’s league, belonging to the Garden Club and showing her flower arrangements at the Iowa State Fair where she won several awards. Marie was known for her beautifully landscaped flowerbeds and along with her husband, Dale landscaped two ponds. Marie was particularly proud of decorating graves on Memorial Day. She loved collecting rocks and flowers for her flower arrangements, making ceramics, china painting and crafts.

She was preceded in death by her parents and foster brother, Jack Chadwich.

Left to cherish her memory are great-grandchildren, David Hanes, Nikki German, Marques (Darnita) Dyer Memphis, Tenn.; Elani Bailey, 15; Malachi Dyer, 12; Micah Dyer, nine; and Trinity “Leona” Dyer, six; Hallie and Daniel Brown; Jack Chadwich; and many friends and relatives.

Friends, work associates, and special cousins, Rita Mae Powell and Bob and Betty Scott, have special memories of Marie.

Per her wishes cremation has taken place and her ashes will be spread in the spring.

Marie had many favorite Bible quotes and she said many wise things. One of her favorite quotes was, “There was nobody perfect ever born and we hung him on a cross - that was Jesus.”

Professional arrangements entrusted to Johnson Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services – Stuart Chapel.
