Leonard was born March 23, 1930, in Valley Junction, Iowa to Leonard L. Sr. and Dorothy Putnam Bisher. He was one of four children born to this marriage. Leonard grew up in Urbandale where he graduated with the class 1948. While in high school Leonard was in the ROTC program. Shortly after high school, Leonard enlisted in the United States Navy and later drafted into the United States Army in 1950. After bootcamp, Leonard was sent to Korea where he served until the end of the war. During this time, he made the rank of Corporal and earned two bronze stars. Bronze Stars are the 4th highest award given for heroism and valor. Leonard was united in marriage to Dona Jean Ansley on July 28, 1950, in Des Moines and to this marriage five children were born, Jim, Jerry, Jenny, Jeff, and Julie. Following their marriage, they lived in Urbandale until moving to Stuart where they lived until 1975 when they made their home in Kimberly City, Missouri. Leonard and Dona owned and operated a construction company for many years. During this time, they had the privilege to build many homes, business buildings and church’s not only in the Stuart but other areas of the United States. During his years in construction, he had the privilege to mentor many kids within the construction field and many of them went on to start their own companies or manage other construction companies. Leonard was very proud of this. Leonard was a lifetime member of the American Legion, was a member of the Elks Club, the Masonic Lodge and became a member of the First Congregational Church after moving back to Stuart. He enjoyed bowling, playing on an adult hockey league, fishing, volunteering, and spending time with his family and friends.
