Obituary for Lillian Mae Moon
Lillian Mae Moon age 80 passed peacefully Sept.11, 2017 at Desert Regional Hospital in Palm Springs, California after a brain aneurysm placed her in coma with no recovery.
Lillian was born January 5, 1937, in Wilburton, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Joseph Sabo and Mary Herko. Lillian was the first of 4 children, Joe (Junior), Gail, and Tommy.
Lillian grew up amongst natures beautiful eastern Pennsylvania mountain landscapes often venturing off to pick blueberries and enjoying her family.
Sadly, in 1943, at the age of 6, Lillian lost her Father suddenly in a car accident. This adversity would help shape her to become a strong, independent and nurturing woman during her lifetime.
After graduating from Con-Cen HS in 1954 where she actively participated in sports, clubs and was the senior prom queen, Lillian packed her bags, jumped on a bus and headed west to California. While living there she would fall in love with a small town Iowa boy from Corwith named Merrill G. Moon, actively serving in the US Navy. The couple would be married on September 3, 1955 in Huntington Beach California. Tragically, 2 years later Lillian would lose her youngest brother, Tommy at the young age of 14.
The young couple moved to Des Moines Iowa where they would start a family with the birth of their first son Thomas in 1960. Then a move to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1965 would bring about another son Brian to complete the family. The Moons would move to New Jersey, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and finally to Stuart, Iowa in 1973.
Lillian worked for the First State Bank in Stuart and as a corporate secretary for Super Value located in West Des Moines until she retired.
Lillian was a member of All Saints Catholic church in Stuart and enjoyed spending time at the 5X80 Country Club golfing and socializing with her friends. Raising and taking care of her family was her #1 priority. She loved to cook and decorate her home for the holidays and was always deeply in love with her husband. There was not much she wouldn’t or couldn’t do. Lillian's talents were vast including drawing and painting, creating and making dolls and costumes for her Grandchildren, knitting, and always with a keen eye for fashion and interior design.
After Merrill retired in the late 80's the couple purchased a home in Corwith, Iowa and together managed a motel in Mason City, Iowa until Merrill's sudden passing in 1998. Lillian moved to Lewis, Iowa shortly after Merrill passed and was able to travel and pull a few slots with her friends along the way.
Lillian loved spending time with her Grandchildren and her Great Grandsons when she moved back to Stuart in 2012. After being diagnosed with late stage dementia in April 2017 Lillian would spend 2 months in a Memory Care Facility in Panora, Iowa before moving to a Palm Springs Memory Care Facility in California.
Lillian is survived by her two sons, Thomas and Brian Moon of Indian Wells, California and eight Grandchildren, four Great Grandsons and other relatives and close friends.
Graveside services will be held, Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 10 am at Calvary Catholic Cemetery with a Celebration of Life following the service at the home of Brad and Nancy Moore located at 414 Wildcat Court in Stuart.
