Louis Amiel (Emil) Waltz passed away February 3, 2016 at the home of his daughter Judy in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Louis was born September 9, 1914, in Hamlin Township, Audubon County, Iowa, number eight of the fourteen children of Amiel and Mary (Conrad) Waltz. The Waltz family moved to a farm near Stuart in 1918, moving the family, livestock and machinery by train.

Louis attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic school through his sophomore year. He then stayed at home to help farm. He married Mary Isabell Jewett on February 4, 1936, at All Saints Catholic Church, in a double ceremony with his brother John and his bride, Rose Brier. Louis and Isabelle moved to a farm southwest of Stuart, and farmed there with his brother Nick for a few years. Their daughter, Judy, was born there. In 1940, they bought a farm south of Menlo, where daughter Janet and son Michael were born. They grew crops, raised hogs and milked cows during their farming years. In 1958, they moved to the original family farm southwest of Stuart, and in 1960 moved a few miles southeast of Stuart, which is the current farmstead.

Over the years, he worked at McCunn’s Implement in Greenfield, and Gilman Implement in Stuart, setting up machinery, was a mechanic, and drove a ready-mix (cement) truck for DeRue Gilman. He also refinished hard wood floors for family and friends in the 40’s and 50’s. In 1947, he and his brother Jim bought a tavern in Stuart named Waltz Inn. Jim and Ruby bought out Louis and Isabell’s interest in 1950, but they would continue to help out when needed.

On November 2, 1944, a U.S. Army B-17 Bomber crashed on their farm southwest of Menlo, killing six of the nine occupants, and setting much of the dry crop on fire. An extensive investigation by the U.S. Army disrupted the harvest that year for several weeks.

Louis was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, called bingo at the Catholic Church, and was on the All Saints Cemetery Board. He also maintained Calvary Cemetery for many years.

Louis was well known for his knowledge and expertise with antique cars (mainly Model A Fords) and John Deere tractors. He often had an antique vehicle in local parades.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Isabell, brothers and sisters-in-law Joe (Mildred), Frank (Helen), John (Rose), Henry (Goldie), Nick (Mary), Albert (Elizabeth), Jim, and Leo, his sisters and brothers-in-law Marie (Jim) Farrell, Anne (Francis) Shea, Elizabeth (Harold) Wurtele, Gertrude Pleiss Miller (Harold), and Catherine (Jerry) Philbin, and his daughter-in-law, Lou C. Waltz. He is survived by his daughters Judith (Richard Brennan), Janet (Marvin) Bassett, and his son, Michael, a sister-in-law, Ruby Waltz, and a brother-in-law, Donnie (Roberta) Burkhart. He is also survived by five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends, all of whom will miss him greatly.
