Obituary for Marjorie Murphy

Marjorie Murphy, of Dexter, Iowa passed away  March 18, 2024 at the Stuart Community Care Center surrounded by her family.  Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, March 22, 2024 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory - Stuart Chapel.  Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday, March 23, 2024 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory - Stuart.  Burial will follow the services in Dexter City Cemetery.  A luncheon and time of fellowship will be held at the Dexter Roundhouse.  

Marjorie Mary Murphy, daughter of Joseph and Katie Clark, was born on October 11, 1926, in Carlisle, Iowa. 

Marjorie moved to Dexter in 1945. She worked at the telephone office in Pitzer for a while, then worked at the Stuart Café, where she met the love of her life, Willard Murphy.

On September 9, 1945, Willard and Marjorie Clark were united in marriage in Dexter, Iowa. Two sons and three daughters were joined to this union, Harold “Butch”, Russell “Murph”, Gloria, Mary Jo, and Diane.

Marjorie was a member of the Penn Center Methodist Church, then transferred to Dexter Presbyterian Church. She went to Camp Farthest Out in Minnesota, where she received Christ as her Lord and savior in 1972. While at the Presbyterian Church, she was head of the women’s group and taught Sunday school for thirteen years.

Marjorie and Willard moved to Cedar Rapids in 1982, and then moved back to Dexter in 1988. Marjorie then joined the Calvary Assembly of God Church. In 2009, she began attending Fairview Church, where she eventually became a member.

Marjorie enjoyed going to watch her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren play sports.

Marjorie loved to cook and bake. She loved to help teach individuals how to make her buns, cinnamon rolls, and other baked goods.

Marjorie was a part of a Lay Witness Team. Before she moved to Cedar Rapids, after all the kids were in school, she went to work, as a cook, at Lewis and Martha Webbs, at Webb’s Café. After moving back from Cedar Rapids, she worked at Hardee and Merith.

Marjorie went on several trips. She always enjoyed life and family.

Marjorie was proceeded in death by her parents Joe and Katie Clark, her husband Willard Murphy, son Harold “Butch” Murphy, Daughter Mary Jo Saffeels, son-in-law Dennis Fredericksen, Tom Montanye, grandson Joe Murphy, great- grandson Etizo, sisters Wanda Jensen, Lucy Cave, Mildren Nutt, Elizabeth Chambers, Luella Smith, Viola Hartman, brother Frank Kent, brothers-in-law Dean Jensen, Ray Shaefer, Atlas Cave, Ralph Chambers, Darrell Hartman, and Lloyd Smith.

Marjorie leaves the following to celebrate her life: daughter Gloria Fredericksen of Dexter, son Russell “Murph” and wife Jan Murphy of Earlham, and daughter Diane Montanye of Dexter. Marjorie is also remembered by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, many other family, and a host of friends.
