Obituary for Marlyn "Gib" Gilbert
Marlyn “Gib” D. Gilbert, 85, of Earlham was called home on Saturday, August 13, 2016 surrounded by loving family. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Tuesday, August 16th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Earlham. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, August 17th at the Earlham Church of Christ. Burial will be at the Earlham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Marlyn Gilbert Memorial Fund and sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, IA 50250. He was born on March 24, 1931 to Loyal (Curly) and Della (Dunbar) Gilbert of Earlham, Iowa.
Marlyn attended country school then Earlham Community School, graduating with the class of 1951. After graduation he served in the Air Force Reserves and was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict. In the Air Force he specialized in Radar and Radio Communications and later transferred to Food Service with the rank of Sergeant. In 1952, he returned to inactive duty with the Reserves.
Marlyn married the love of his life, Bertha (Bert) Thurman, on June 26, 1954, at the Earlham Church of Christ. They had three children: Teresa, Shelley and Rick.
He had been employed with the telephone company for 38 years at the time of his retirement in 1990.
Marlyn and Bert enjoyed 16 winters in sunny Arizona. He enjoyed friends who also joined them in Arizona for the winter and liked playing pool, winning several pool championships.
Marlyn also enjoyed mowing and living on their beautiful farm. He loved all the time he spent there with his family. Marlyn was a life-long member of the Earlham Church of Christ.
He is survived by his loving wife Bert of Earlham; daughter Teresa and spouse Jim Lemon of Earlham, daughter Shelley and spouse David Marsh of Dexter, and son Rick and spouse Maren Gilbert of Earlham. Grandchildren: Kelli (Jeff) Lemon of Earlham, Angelena (Bob) Heim of Clive, Amber Olson of Dexter, Kasey (Wayne) McDaniel of Earlham, Ashley (Charles) Miller of Stuart, Tyler (Lindsey) Gilbert of Adel, Chad (Kailynn) Gilbert of Earlham, Brant Gilbert of Earlham. He was also blessed with 17 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Marlyn was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters-in-law's: Delbert and Glois Gilbert and Verlyn and Margaret Gilbert.
