Obituary for Maxine C. Wallace
Maxine C. Wallace, 98, of Stuart, Iowa passed away peacefully May 13, 2022, surround by her family. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at the Johnson Family Funeral Home – Stuart Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service in South Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and/or Stuart Public Library where she volunteered for many years. The family cordially invites guests to a luncheon following the burial at the Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodge in Stuart. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
Maxine was born December 29, 1923, in Atlantic, Iowa to Hobart McKinley and Elnora Marie (Flynn) Clark. She was one of four children. Maxine grew up in Guthrie Center and attended Guthrie Center Schools. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Franklin Wallace in Maryville, Missouri and together they became the proud parents of four children, Larry, Alan, Craig, and Karen. Following their marriage, they lived in Bedford and Davenport before making their home in Stuart in 1948. Maxine worked for Gambles Store in Stuart before being employed at Ma Bell/AT&T as a telephone operator. She worked in the Stuart office before being transferred to Des Moines where she worked until her retirement in 1983. Maxine, her husband Kenneth, and son Alan operated the Phillips 66 station in Stuart prior to their passing in 1968. During this time, they worked alongside their son, Alan. The station was a hangout for all the kids. Maxine was a member of the First Congregational Church in Stuart, longtime member of the Odd Fellows & Rebecka’s Lodge in Stuart, the Pioneer Group through the telephone company, and the American Legion Auxiliary in Stuart. In Maxine’s retirement she enjoyed volunteering countless hours at the Stuart Library, Congregate Meals and at the Congregational Church helping with bible study and funeral dinners for many years. She also enjoyed china painting, reading, spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her special friend Merle, playing cards with friends, visiting with neighbors at her complex, making her famous potato salad for her family, wintering in Arizona with Merle and the many trips and cruises she went on through the years with her dear friends.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Kenneth on November 27, 1968, son, Alan Wallace in December 8, 1968, siblings, Howard, Dean and Phyllis Clark, special friend Merle Olsen, and her granddaughter-in-law, Sarah Johnson.
Maxine leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved children, Larry (Dixie) Wallace of Franklin, Tennessee, Craig (Madonna) Wallace of West Des Moines, Iowa and Karen (David) Johnson of Panora, Iowa; grandchildren, Shannon (Tim Hasselhof) Wallace, of Chandler, Arizona, Kenny (Carol) Wallace of Menlo, Iowa, Matt (Kimberly) Johnson of Carmel, Indiana, Mark Wallace of Franklin, Tennessee and Mike (Katie) Johnson of Stuart, Iowa; great grandchildren, Kennedy Wallace, Garrett Johnson, Alan Wallace, Tyler Johnson, Emma Johnson, Kiefer Wallace, Sarah Johnson, Kaitlin Johnson, Abigail Johnson, Krislyn Wallace, Clara Johnson and Briggs Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends all of whom will miss her greatly.
