Obituary for Melinda H. (Buhr) Holbrook
Melinda H. (Buhr) Holbrook, 65, of Stuart passed away peacefully December 21, 2019 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines. A gathering of friends and family will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, December 27, 2019 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Stuart. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 28th at the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Stuart. A luncheon will be held immediately following the funeral at the Church. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in Highland Cemetery in Bayard. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Melinda’s honor to an Athletic Booster Club of your choice and/or the Stuart Fire and Rescue Department. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com. The family requests everyone to wear purple in honor of Melinda.
Melinda was born July 6, 1954 in Manning, Iowa to Louis Joseph and Ila Jean (Kinnick) Buhr. She was raised in Bayard and graduated from Bayard Community School with the class of 1973. Following graduation, Melinda moved to Des Moines and enrolled in Americana Beauty School earning her degree in Cosmetology. She was united in marriage to Dwight David Holbrook on August 10, 1974 at the Presbyterian Church in Dexter. To this union two sons were born, Joseph and Brandon. Following their marriage, they lived in Dexter before moving to Stuart. While living in Dexter, Melinda opened a beauty shop and ran it for 5 years. Other employments were managing the Casey’s General Store in Dexter, Dexfield Schools, Greyhound, Prairie Dog, Sears Credit, Dice, JJAM Racing and most recently for the Johnston Community School System for 13 years. Melinda was a member of the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, past member of the Fine Arts and Athletic Boosters at West Central Valley Schools and through the years had been on several bowling leagues. Melinda enjoyed working for Newell’s Concessions at the Iowa State Fair. She also enjoyed bowling, watching her children and grandchildren’s many activities and spending quality time with her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her Parents, Louis and Ila Jean Buhr, her beloved husband, Dwight, in 2004; Mother & Father-in-Law: Helen and Bert Keufner, Brothers in Law: Frank, Bud, Glen and Dean, Sisters in Law: Mary Edna, Terri, Roxanne, Linda, Mary Jane, Lavonna, Norma.
Melinda leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, Joseph David Holbrook of Stuart and Brandon D. (Shannon) Holbrook of Altoona. Her Special Adopted Children: Jami (Kevin) Rafter of Stuart, Katie (Shawn) Phippen of Stuart and Greg (Abbie) Saxton of Truro. Grandchildren: Tess, Brooklyn, Colby, Beau, Carter, Macie and Kaitlyn. Other grandchildren because she said so: Matthew, Ayden, Alyc, Allyson, Karl and Jameson. Her Siblings: Pamela (Jim) Rumelhart of Waukee, Michelle (Charles) Davis of Clive, Teresa Buhr of Des Moines and Haydn (Lynnette) Buhr of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, Susie Holbrook of Houghton, Louisiana, Alice Judevine of Carter Lake, Karen (Don) Crom of Omaha, Nebraska, Elaine Boyll of Terre Haute, Indiana, Pete (Teresa) Holbrook of North Sioux City, South Dakota, Kaye (Jack) Huffman of Decatur, Nebraska, Doug (Shirley) Holbrook of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Gayle (David) Wickwire of Bellevue, Nebraska, Dale Holbrook of Des Moines and Kelly (Joe) Larson of Ankeny and many, many nieces, nephews and a plethora of friends.
