Mick, as he was known by family and friends, was born August 25, 1954, in Portsmouth, Virginia to Max and Gertrude “Trudy” (Maley) Askren. He was one of five children born to this marriage. Growing up, the family moved several times with Max being in the military. They lived in Norfolk, Virginia; Bayonne, New Jersey; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Jacksonville, Florida before making their home in Stuart. Mick graduated from Stuart-Menlo High School with the class of 1972. While in school, Mick enjoyed wrestling and playing football. Following high school, Mick went to work for Bisher Construction where he worked and learned the construction trade before moving to Davenport. While in Davenport, he worked for Priester Construction, and during this time, Mick met Priscilla Laird and were later married on May 9, 1981. Following their marriage, they lived in Davenport and Arlington, Texas before making their home in Stuart in 1991. Mick finished his construction career as job Superintendent for Weitz Construction Company in August of 2009. Mick loved the town of Stuart and was very passionate about its success. He was appointed to the Stuart City Council serving from January of 1994 to December of 2007 and reappointed in January of 2018 to December of 2021, Parks and Recreation Board, the Stuart Aquatic Center board, was a volunteer driver for the Stuart Ambulance, and was Planning and Zoning Coordinator from 2004 to 2011. Mick was also involved in the West Central Valley School system. He served from December of 2008 to September of 2013 on the school board and was reelected on September of 2009 while also driving the activity bus to many events over the years and was very active within the wrestling program. In 2004, Mick took over the Mat Pack Wrestling Club and ran that for many years eventually merging it into the WCV Wrestling Club in 2018. Through wrestling, Mick helped many kids achieve their dream of becoming state qualifiers and state place winners. He enjoyed volunteering and helping anywhere when needed. He helped build the concession stands at the little league baseball, softball, and soccer complex. Mick helped coach little league baseball, football, and wrestling; he also enjoyed helping plan all the 1972 class reunions. Mick’s favorite past time however was spending time with his family and friends and staying up on all things wrestling. He was his family’s biggest cheerleader and the love he had for his family was his top priority. Mick was a friend to all and loved endlessly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Max and Trudy Askren, sister Roseann and one brother John.
Mick leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Priscilla of Stuart; children Mikayla (Ethan) Calvert of Stuart and John (Emma) Askren of Woodbury, Minnesota; siblings, Chuck (Lisa) Askren of LaValle, Wisconsin and Timothy Askren of Tulsa, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Pat Askren of Stuart, Florida and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
