Michael Scott, a man known for his friendly demeanor, generous spirit, and creative soul, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa. Born on September 18, 1952, in Des Moines, and was adopted by his loving parents Calvin Charles and Ava Pauline Scott. He spent his entire life in the state he loved, surrounded by family, a multitude of friends.
Michael, a proud alumnus of Dexfield High School, graduated with the class of 1971. His high school years were marked by his remarkable achievement as a state champion in both indoor and outdoor pole vaulting, soaring over 13 feet. His athletic prowess was matched by his artistic talent, which led him to pursue further education in Commercial Art at DMAC. There, his skills flourished, and he left a lasting legacy by drawing the present Devil for the Dexfield Blue Devils mascot, an emblem that continues to inspire the Dexfield spirit.
After his educational pursuits, Michael embarked on a career that saw him dedicate many years to the County Farm in Dallas County before its closure. He later joined Shottenkirk Chevrolet in Waukee, where he worked until his retirement. Throughout his career, Michael was known for his strong work ethic and the friendly, approachable manner he maintained with colleagues and clients alike.
Michael's passion for music was evident to all who knew him. His extensive record collection, the countless concerts he attended, and the concert stubs he meticulously collected were a testament to the soundtrack that underscored his life. These interests were complemented by his love for art, which was not only a hobby but a way of life. As an avid artist, Michael's creative touch was evident in everything he did, from his detailed drawings to the orderly way he maintained his home, ensuring that everything had its place.
His early years were spent growing up in Dexter, Iowa, where the foundation of his character was built among friends and family. Eventually, he moved to an acreage outside of Earlham, embracing the rural lifestyle before relocating to the county farm. His final move brought him to Waukee, where he continued to enjoy the simple pleasures of life in the company of those he cherished.
Michael's family and friends were the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his brothers, Gary (Wanda) Haugen, Mark Haugen, and Jeff (Elizabeth) Haugen all of Florida; his sister, Heidi (Bo) Vizcaini of Texas; and his 10 adored nieces and nephews, as well as 18 great-nieces and nephews. Each family member, from the youngest to the oldest, held a special place in his heart, and their memories of Michael will be treasured forever.
Michael is preceded by his parents, Calvin Charles and Ava Pauline Scott, cousins, Colleen (Owens) Danielson, Rick Scott and Scotty Bebout.
Beyond his family, Michael leaves behind a host of friends who will miss his warmth, laughter, and the genuine care he extended to all. His ability to make each person feel valued was one of his greatest gifts, and his absence will be deeply felt.
Michael Scott's life was one of connection and creativity, marked by the generosity he showed to others and the passion he had for his interests. He lived with a sense of purpose and placed great value on the relationships he nurtured throughout his life. As we remember Michael, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of moments that brought joy to himself and those around him. His legacy will live on in the memories we cherish and the lives he touched with his kindness.
