Obituary for Norbert Frank Tigges

Norbert F Tigges, 95 of Dexter passed away peacefully at his home on May 14, 2022. Visitation will be held from 5-7P.M. on Thursday, May 19th at the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, May 20th at the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. Burial with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Norbert F. Tigges was born on November 15, 1926, in Dedham, Iowa to Henry and Elizabeth (Renze) Tigges. He attended St. Mary’s grade school and Mt Carmel High School. Norbert served his country in the 3014 Engineers Battalion in World War II. He was stationed with occupation forces near Osaka, Japan.

On April 19, 1949, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Bock at St Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton. Together they were blessed with 8 children: Carol, Vickie, Kent, Jan, Mark, Todd, Mary Kaye, and Paula.

Norbert worked for Pepsi Cola in Carroll early in his career, was engaged in farming, and worked for Mid-Seven Transportation as a truck driver for over 25 years. He retired in 1983.

Norbert and Phyllis lived in the Dexter area since the 1960s. They wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 30 years during their retirement. They enjoyed hiking, BINGO, gambling, dancing, getting together with their friends, and big Sunday dinners with the family.

Norbert was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and was a former Trustee, a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, and a past commander of the American Legion Post 147. He Received the Quilt of Valor in 2017 at the Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. In retirement he drove the support vehicle for Team Norbert on RAGBRAI.

Norbert is survived by his wife of 73 years Phyllis, his children: Vickie Moorhead of Adel, Kent (Cindy) Tigges of Humboldt, Jan (Paul) Meister of Kingsley, Mark (Angie) Tigges of Earlham, Todd (Zina) Tigges of Dexter, Mary Kaye (Dave) Stratton of DeSoto, and Paula (Jeff) Foshe of Ankeny, half-sisters Joleen Miller of Ankeny and Mildred Wurzer of Coon Rapids, half-brother Vernon (Norma) Tigges of Dexter, sisters-in-law Shirley Clark of Lake City and Ruth Ann Bock of Hamlin, son-in-law Bob Lee of DeSoto, 16 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step mother Minnie (Bauer) Tigges, his brother George Tigges, his oldest daughter Carol Lee, and son-in-law Larry Moorhead.
