Dick, as he was known by family and friend, was born July 29, 1944, to Paul and Irene (Stickler) Doherty in Stuart, Iowa. He was raised in Stuart and graduated from Stuart High School with the class of 1963. Growing up Dick participated in the Boy Scouts of America, later becoming a Explorer Scout. Following graduation, Dick went to work for Principal Life Insurance Company where he worked until retiring. He also joined his mother in the Four Winds Gift Shop in Stuart selling precious Fenton Lamps and other glassware from 1962 to the present. He was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church where he taught Catechism for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was the President of Project Restore in Stuart. Project Restore Foundation was formed by local residents in 1996 wishing to see the old structure restored. Dick spearheaded this restoration of the old All Saints Catholic Church now known as All Saints Center following the tragic arson fire in 1995. In the late 2000’s, Dick and the others were able to see their hard work pay off with the opening of the new All Saints Center, which became a premier wedding venue in the area and a community gathering spot for large events. His other passion in life was being a caregiver to his mom Irene, and his sister Patsy. Dick enjoyed family history, gardening, tending to his many flowers, taking care of the All Saints Center, making wine, and photography.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Irene Doherty, brothers, Paul Howard, Danny, Jim, John and Kenny Doherty, sisters, Mary Hayes, Alice Alexander, and Infant Barbara.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his sisters, Pasty Purviance, Ellen (Tom) King and Theresa (Russ) Wells and a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.
