Rick was born on December 29, 1961, to John and Rosemary (Ripperger) Putney in Des Moines. He grew up in Ackworth and attended Indianola schools, graduating with the class of 1980. Following graduation he attended IMT for computer technology. He worked for 23 years at Nationwide in the IT Department in Des Moines. He also owned and operated Ricky J's Country Café in Dexter for two years and had just started a flea market business, The Forgotten Corner. He was looking forward to retiring and spending more time reducing, reusing and recycling items and turning them into unique and one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Rick was always upbeat about anything he chose to do in life.
On May 29, 1990, he was united in marriage to Teresa Hillgren in Dexter. The couple has made their home in Dexter for the last 25 years. He often described their life as an episode of the Lucy and Ricky Riccardo show! In his spare time, he loved to garden and their yard is absolute proof of his love for flowers. He participated in and taught martial arts for several years.
He was a man with a huge heart and was full of life. He loved his family, loved to help others and always found the good in people.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosemary Putney and many, many others.
Rick leaves behind his loving wife, Teresa; children, Steven (Christina) Hillgren and Chelsea Putney (Mark Derry); grandchildren, Logan Hillgren and Calvin Derry; father, John Putney; sisters, Ronna (Todd) Vickroy and Julie (Tony) Schwarting; and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
