Rita Blackford, 76, of Earlham passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Madison County Hospital in Winterset. Celebration of life service will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, October 26th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Earlham. Luncheon will immediately follow the services at the Earlham Church of Christ. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. Memorial contributions may be made in Rita's name to AHeinz 57 Pet Rescue in DeSoto. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
Rita was born on March 28, 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa; the beloved daughter of Leota Cameron and John Dale Holmes. A graduate of AIB College of Business, Rita dedicated 32 years of her career to Blue Cross Blue Shield. On December 14, 1968, she married the love of her life, Robert Blackford, in Indianola. Together, they built a home in rural Madison County, where they lived for 51 years until his passing after 45 years of marriage.
Rita had a passion for gardening, painting, and collecting jewelry. She took great joy in hosting family gatherings, holiday celebrations, Bible study groups, and retirement lunches. Above all, Rita cherished the time spent with her family, creating lasting memories that will be treasured forever.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leota and John Dale Holmes; and her husband, Robert Blackford.
She is survived by her two daughters, Shelley Bunnell and Jennifer (Jeff) Clover, as well as her cherished grandchildren: Joe (Tabi) Sprunger, Kaiti (Jeff) Culp, Jenni (Jack) Randleman, Kim Patterson, and Chance Clover. Rita also leaves behind her adored great-grandchildren: Clarabelle, Delainie, Dean, Logan, Hailee, Colton, and Kendra.
Her warmth, kindness, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her..
