Robert Lee Thompson, 84, passed away, May 31, 2024, peacefully at home. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 5th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home with burial following in the South Oak Grove Cemetery-Stuart. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 4th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner’s or St. Jude Hospital. Robert was born on July 22, 1939, in Iowa to Leon (Shorty) Thompson and Orpha (Short) Thompson. He grew up in Dexter, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Judith (Lomax) Thompson on June 12, 1960. To this union three daughters were born, Cynthia, Valerie, and Kristen.
Bob was selected to participate in the railroad training program out of high school and was hired by the Rock Island Railroad. He went to telegraph school in Minnesota and trained across the midwest, before eventually settling in Des Moines. He was a train dispatcher for 42 years, receiving the Harriman Safety Award numerous times throughout his career. He retired from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in 1999.
In 1965, he and Judy moved to Des Moines, IA to raise their family. He enjoyed many hobbies over the years including: auto restoration, woodworking, bonsai, and antique collecting and selling.
Bob was an integral part of his grandchildren’s lives and bestowed his kindness and fun loving spirit on them. They enjoyed family vacations, trips to Saylorville Lake, golfing, antiquing, and attending baseball and soccer games and other sporting events in which his grandchildren participated.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, parents, and beloved daughter, Valerie. He leaves behind his children, Cynthia Kay Bloom, Kristen Lee (Ted) Redenius, and grandchildren Adam and Alex Bloom, and Matt and Evan Redenius who will miss him deeply, as well as countless others whose lives he has touched.
