Cynthia Sue (Swanson) Baker died peacefully on Sunday, April 21st in her home outside of Redfield, Iowa at the age of 59. Born June 7, 1964 in Des Moines, Iowa to Dean Swanson and Janet Moser.
Sindy grew up in Dallas Center, Iowa, worked the paper route at age 11 to purchase her first horse – a passion that followed her through all her life. Sindy married her husband Bruce on May 6th, 1995 at Beaver Lake in Dexter, Iowa. They lived together with their 3 daughters north of Redfield. She and Bruce enjoyed their travels around the country to see NASCAR races and trail rides. Sindy enjoyed spending weekends camping with her family, her horses, and her dogs.
Sindy was proud of her 13 years as a paraeducator at the West Central Valley Middle School. She built lifelong relationships with some of her students and loved telling students and staff to smile 300 times a day.
In 2001 she sought out to find another horse activity for her and her girls to participate in and was inspired by 9/11 to honor our nation’s armed forces. This started the Raccoon River Riders Equestrian Drill Team. Sindy led the team for 20 years while they performed at various events all over Iowa. Throughout the years she crafted the routines, music, and designed uniforms all with the patriotic theme dedicated to honoring American heroes. Her motto was always ‘Without struggle, there is no progress,” which was an attitude she carried through her life, too.
Sindy had an infectiously positive attitude even while facing adversity. She overcame a lot in her life and was determined to inspire others by spreading positivity through photos and quotes with friends and family. While we mourn the loss of her, we will see the beauty in all sunrises and sunsets just as she did.
Sindy is preceded in death by her daughter, Ashley Baker, father, Dean Swanson, and step-brother, Steve Ware. She leaves behind her husband, Bruce, daughters Megan (Frank) Doherty, Angel (Devon) Osberg, and Stormy (Sam) Miller, grandsons Denon, Dega, DJ, Owen, Levi, and Baker, mother Janet Moser, and step-mother Kathy Wright.
