Obituary for Thomas Albert O'Brien
Thomas Albert O’Brien Jr, 86, of Stuart, Iowa formerly of Des Moines passed away August 22, 2014 at the Stuart Community Care Center. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, August 25, 2014 at the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 P.M. A Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 26, at the All Saints Catholic Church. Burial will be held in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the All Saints Catholic Church and/or the Stuart Community Care Center in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Tom (Albert) as he was known to family and friends was born August 13, 1928 on the family farm south of Stuart to Thomas Albert Sr. and Catherine Egan O’Brien. He graduated from Stuart High School with the class of 1946 and after graduating moved to California. Tom spent a few years in California before moving to Des Moines and worked at Firestone. He enlisted into the United States Army on December 5, 1950 and during this time was stationed in Germany. Tom was honorably discharged on November 25, 1952 and returned to Des Moines. Tom was united in marriage to Helen Eilene Mikesell on December 21, 1955 in Des Moines at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church and together they became the proud parents of three sons: Steven, Thomas and Dennis. He went to work for the City of Des Moines on the Fire Department and served as an Engineer/Driver for several stations throughout Des Moines before retiring after 29 years of service. In 1976, Tom moved to Stuart to make his home. Tom was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, VFW post 9127 in Des Moines and the Stuart American Legion. In Tom’s free time, he enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Catherine O’Brien, his beloved wife, Helen in 2000 and one brother, Jon in 2007.
Tom leaves to cherish his memory, companion, Rosie Hazen; his beloved children, Steve (Sue Anthony) O’Brien, of Pleasant Hill, Tom (Janet) O’Brien of Windsor Heights, and Dennis O’Brien of Des Moines; brother, Harold O’Brien of Des Moines; grandchildren, Craig (Tia) O’Brien, Shannon O’Brien, Kelsey O’Brien, Megan O’Brien, Scott O’Brien, Nikki O’Brien and Lexxi O’Brien; one great grandchild, Teagen O’Brien; three nieces, Kelly Trave, Robbin Beeler and Doreen O’Brien; nephew, Mike O’Brien and a host of friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
