Obituary for Velma Louise Sheldahl
Velma Louise Sheldahl, 86, of Menlo, Iowa passed away January 7, 2017, at her home. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory – Stuart Chapel. A celebration of her life will follow the visitation at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Velma Sheldahl Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50205. Velma was born July 29, 1930 in Dexter, Iowa to Oscar George and Della May Moore Carpenter. She was raised in Dexter and graduated from Dexter High School. Following graduation, Velma worked as a telephone switchboard operator in Dexter. She was united in marriage to Arnold Sheldahl on February 4, 1950 and together they became the proud parents of seven children, Paul, Amanda, Mary, Stephen, Ilene, Dale and Amelia. After their marriage they lived in Stuart, Sibley, and Ashton before moving back to Stuart where they lived until making their home in Menlo. Velma was an avid gardener and enjoyed the time spent with her family harvesting the vegetable and canning their produce. She also enjoyed baking, playing a good game of dominos, camping with her in-laws at Springbrook, and spending time with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Della, siblings, Grace Wulf, Alice Little Francis, Hazel Evans, Martha Ballinger, Marie Klemmetson, Lloyd Carpenter, Paul Carpenter, Genora Stodden, and Ralph Carpenter.
Velma leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved husband, Arnold of Menlo; children, Paul Sheldahl of Stuart, Amanda Sheldahl Bosch of Des Moines, Mary (Greg) Porter of Malvern, Iowa, Stephen (Deb) Sheldahl of Peru, Ilene (Jim) Schaffer of Omaha, Dale (Carol) Sheldahl of Orient and Amelia Sheldahl of Omaha; one sister, Mary Sherlock of Bullhead, Arizona; grandchildren, Jason Sheldahl, Grant Bosch, Emily Baughman, Ryan and Michael Sheldahl, Alicia Lynch, George and Angela Johnson and Jake Sheldahl; 23 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends all of whom will miss her greatly.
