Vernon Welker, 59, of rural Menlo passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Guthrie County Hospital. Cremation has taken place at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Stuart. The family will host a celebration of life service at 1:30 PM on Saturday, May 13th at the Guthrie Center Baptist Church. A luncheon will be served at Noon at the church. Vernon was born on May 25, 1963 to Clifford and Julia (Sheldahl) Welker in Guthrie Center, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm south of Menlo and attended Stuart-Menlo schools. He graduated from Stuart-Menlo High School with the class of 1981. He was united in marriage to Sherry Smelley on June 11, 1984. The couple lived in various places before lastly settling on the family farm. They took pride in being each other’s rock in life, being there in every situation. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, boating, farming and playing the guitar.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Julia Welker.
He leaves behind his wife, Sherry of rural Menlo; brothers: Sam (Jolena) Welker of Van Meter, Mike (Mary) Welker of Dallas Center and Jon (Angel) Welker of Menlo; step-siblings: Jennifer (Rick) Clark of Texas, Matt (Vivian) Akers of Wisconsin, Melissa (Glen) Pohl of Perry, Monte (Marjie) Akers of Johnston and Melody Wasson of Panora; sisters-in-law, Kay (Frank) High of Illinois and Pam Smelley of Alabama; brothers-in-law, Truman Smelley of Texas and George Johnson of Nebraska; and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
