W. Enid (Beattie) Shirley was born on December 27, 1916 to Howard and Jessie Evans of Centerville, Iowa and passed away on January 9, 2015; she was 98 years young.
After graduating from Centerville High School Enid attended Stephens College and Drake University where she was a Kappa Kappa Gamma. Upon graduation from Drake University Enid and two other sorority sisters traveled to Chicago where she worked for Merrill Lynch in a brokerage firm. After a few years she traveled to Stuart, IA where she taught Kindergarten, High school, Junior High, Fifth and Sixth grade English. This is where she met John Joseph (Jack) Beattie. They married and had one daughter Linda.
Enid was a member of the First Congregational Church, Delphian’s, and P.E.O. Chapter BQ. She enjoyed playing canasta, pitch or any kind of cards but bridge was her favorite which she was still playing. Most the time you would find Enid running around following her daughter, grandkids and great grandkids watching them show their cattle, playing sports, or just going to the lake to enjoy the families vacation on the water. She was always out helping her friends whether it was to take them a meal, run them to Des Moines, or just go shopping for them.
Upon the loss of Jack, Enid married long time friend Jim Shirley, Jim brought three daughters to the family: Leslie Ryan, Kim Buske and Vickie Strosahl. Jim and Enid would spend the next few years traveling.
Enid was always a very busy lady settling into small town life quite well. She enjoyed family, friends and entertaining. Enid might have been little but she sure was mighty as everyone that knew her could contest to. She will be greatly missed by all.
Enid is survived by her daughter Linda (Rod) Williams of Stuart; grandchildren Nathan Geil of Greenfield, Iowa, Jennifer Geil of Stuart, Iowa; great-grandchildren Katelyn Geil, Logan and Maria Pruitt; sister in law Ava Evans of Greeley, Colorado. Nephew Doug (Jan) Evans of Aurora, Colorado, Great Nephews Brad (Tammy) Evans of Colorado, Brian Evans of Colorado, Great Great Nephews Adam Evans, Greg Evans, Zach Evans of Colorado.
Enid was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a nephew, and her husbands.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Hospice of Central Iowa for their loving care.
